What to tell us when you call
Give the property postcode, your contact number and a short description of what is happening. Is water actively dripping, spreading across the ceiling or coming through near a light? Is anything hanging above a path? Is the affected roof on the main house, a porch, extension or garage?
Explain any access restriction and whether the damage followed wind, rain or recent work. Safe ground-level photographs can help, but do not put yourself at risk to get them. If the problem changes, tell us rather than assuming the original description still covers it.
Safety comes before a closer look
Keep away from wet switches, fittings and appliances, and seek appropriate electrical assistance where water has affected them. Do not stand beneath a visibly sagging or bulging ceiling. Keep children, pets and visitors out of areas exposed to falling roof materials.
Do not climb onto the roof, lean from windows or use a ladder in dangerous weather. If there is an immediate danger to life, contact the emergency services. A roofing enquiry is not a substitute for emergency assistance where people are in danger.
What can be achieved on the first visit?
That depends on the fault, the weather, safe access and the materials required. The first practical work may be making an area safe or reducing water entry with suitable temporary protection. Some defects can be permanently repaired when the conditions and scope allow.
