What a GRP roof consists of
GRP uses glass reinforcement within a resin system, with a finishing coat and compatible trims. It can form a continuous waterproof surface over a suitable deck. The result depends on the whole system, including preparation and the treatment of corners and changes in level. It is not simply a coating that can be applied to any old roof regardless of its condition.
A stable deck is essential
Movement in poorly supported boards can stress the finished laminate. The deck type, board arrangement, fixings and expansion considerations need to follow the selected system. Where an existing roof has leaked, the condition beneath must be established before it is enclosed. A clean surface does not prove that the supporting timber is dry or sound.
Weather and curing conditions
Resin systems need suitable application and curing conditions. Rain, moisture and temperature affect the method and programme, so installation should be planned around the product instructions. Rushing a finish onto a damp substrate can undermine the work. The schedule should allow for the preparation and weather window required for a reliable installation.
Trims, rooflights and wall connections
GRP can provide a neat edge around a well-designed roof, but corners and upstands still need suitable reinforcement and termination. Rooflight kerbs and wall flashings must have enough height above the completed surface. If insulation is added during replacement, that extra height needs to be considered before the edge details are fixed.
Suitability and limitations
Roof size, movement, substrate and intended use influence whether GRP is appropriate. A system designed for maintenance access should not be treated as a balcony surface without a separate specification. Repairing an existing GRP roof
Cracks need assessment of their cause. A local repair may be possible with compatible preparation and reinforcement, but recurring movement below the surface must also be addressed. Keep the original system details where available, as they help establish an appropriate repair method and any guarantee conditions.
